The human eye is capable of seeing an enormous range of light. When we look out into the world at sunset, we can see details in highlights, in shadows, and all in between. Our cameras of today, as good as they are, cannot capture the range of light that we can see.
This photography is called a High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography. In order to increase the range of light present in the scene, three photographs were taken at different exposure setting. One exposure captured the mid-range of exposure (similar to what your camera would take on an auto setting). One was taken to capture the highlights and another to capture the shadows. These three images were then blended together to produce the HDR photo you see. A tripod was used to insure the exact same image was capture with each shot.
